This marvelous life hack is inspired by an amusing scene in Mark chapter 9.
Traveling from Galilee to Capernaum, all 12 disciples are walking along behind Jesus, arguing about which of them is the greatest.
Jesus is sharing amazing stuff, describing his betrayal, death, and resurrection. But the disciples are barely listening. Instead, each is claiming dibs on being Jesus’ favorite sidekick.
Jesus knows their every thought, but still he later asks, “What were you arguing about on the road?” The men all get real quiet. Then Jesus delivers this line: “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all.” Once again, Jesus turns conventional wisdom upside down.
The world says the greatest is the first to reach the mountaintop. First in home runs. First at the box office. First in the ballot box.
But it turns out, true greatness comes when you put others ahead of yourself. Yes, we should strive for excellence. Absolutely, God wants us to use our gifts and give our best efforts in all we do. But when glory comes, give it away. Be humble and gracious.
Want to do great things? Me too. Let’s start with serving our families—including our spouse, kids, parents, brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews. Then serving our friends. Then serving our neighbors and the rest of the planet.
Live as a servant to all. Be last in line. And you just might experience true greatness.
