“Been singing it for years.”

No interpretation from this writer on this Christmas Day. Just some lines of lyrics you know well. You could make it a game to see how fast you can identify the carol.  Or dig deeper to consider the subtext that should be obvious, but is often overlooked.

“certain poor shepherds”

“over the hills and everywhere”

“to save us all from Satan’s power”

“fit us for heaven to live with thee there”

“God and sinners reconciled”

“angels bending near the earth”

“making spirits bright”

“let earth receive her king”

“rocks, hills, and plains repeat the sounding joy”

“citizens of heaven above”

“long lay the earth in sin and error pining”

“hopes and fears of all the years”

“love’s pure light”

“it’s the best time of the year”

“King forever, ceasing never”

“bring us some figgy pudding”

“haste, haste to bring him laud”

and my favorite, “ransom captive Israel”

Be well. Be at peace. Be just the right amount of merry!
